Pankration: The Traditional Greek Combat Sport & Modern Martial Art $23.9 Massad Ayoob of Black Belt magazine called pankration "the most practical street combat form of the martial arts that I have ever seen." Now you can learn pankration from Jim Arvanitis, the world’s leading authority of the legendary Western combat art and its modern descendant. Throughout this fascinating and completely updated volume, Arvanitis provides extensive insight into the facts and myths of pankration’s early history (including its inclusion in the earliest Olympic Games), its techniques and strategies, and its impact on today’s martial arts. Numerous vase drawings and statues depict the combined striking and grappling skills of the trained combat athletes of classical Greece, and more than 450 photos demonstrate the modern application of what many believe is the world’s first recognized fighting art. Also included are proven training methods, Spartan discipline secrets and strategic applications for personal defense, such as setups, combinations and countering moves. |

Prepare for Combat: Strength Training for the Martial Arts $15.37 Traditionally, the martial arts community believed that engaging in weight training was detrimental to the performance of the art, that it would hinder one’s flexibility, speed, and agility. To be effective fighters, martial artists had to be quick and light on their feet like Bruce Lee and other slim and small, but powerful fighters. They maintained that karate was all about good techniques and proper timing and that muscle size has little to do with it. After all, the art of self-defense lies in the premise that smaller, weaker people can defend themselves effectively against larger, stronger opponents. While it’s true that good technique and proper timing are essential, there’s no reason to believe that muscular fitness will hinder a martial artist’s effectiveness. In fact, just the opposite is true: with increased strength comes the enhanced ability to defend oneself. A well-designed weight-training routine–in addition to regular martial arts practice–will make practitioners stronger, not slower. In some cases, it can even improve their speed. Fortunately, the attitude toward weight training in the martial arts community has changed–largely due to an abundance of scientific data showing the positive effects of weight training for all kinds of sports. Today’s athletes have much to gain by using weights to improve their performance. For martial artists, these gains include increased strength, increased resistance to fatigue, and even decreased risk of injury. In this book, veteran martial artist and fitness expert Mikhail Krupnik shows readers how to design a weight-training program to fit their individual needs and goals. From all-important safety issues, determining one’s levelof fitness, and setting goals, to specific exercises, sample routines, and even proper nutrition–he covers everything martial artists need to know to enhance their performance with weight training. |

Combat, Ritual, and Performance: Anthropology of the Martial Arts $111.46 Presents a collection of readings which introduce the study of martial behaviors in a cross-cultural context. The subject matter ranges from a consideration of the warclub as weapon and status symbol among the chiefdoms of the American Southwest at the time of European contact to contemporary ritual warfare in the highlands of Bolivia. All over the world, warriors have left their mark on culture. Their codes of behavior become the basis of diplomacy, models of service, and courage in the protection of social institutions. "Chivalry" in the West arose from the codes of the noble knights and Bushido, (The Way of the Warrior), the "Bible" of the Samurai, still serves as the basis of etiquette in modern Japan. In practically every society myths and tales of culture heroes who are warriors are important in the enculturation and socialization of children. Martial arts, which are stylized behaviors displaying techniques related to those practiced on the battlefield, are considered here to be more about culture, art, and history than about fighting. |

Igensho: The Book of Dignity: General Principles of Martial Art $18.73 Igensho: The Book of Dignity, is a short work on martial art. It is unique in several respects: 1. Igensho posits what may be the first and only serviceable definition of exactly what martial art is, and the only clear explanations of what it is for, and how it works. 2. It presents a simple, effective method by which the reader can govern his or her life, utilizing the same basic, general principles by which nation states are governed. The principles are few and simple. The applications are extensive and numerous. It shows clearly that the essential applications of martial art extend far beyond those of close combat. Moreover it shows that the art is accessible to all persons, and may be applied by them everywhere and at all times, to advantage. This includes everyone from military and law enforcement personnel, to practitioners of all systems of martial art, to children and the elderly. 3. The method enables the practitioner to do four things: first, to avoid dangerous problems. Secondly, to solve unavoidable problems efficiently if possible, without recourse to violence. Thirdly, to respond appropriately to violence with the judicious use of force. Lastly, to be aware of the consequences of using the force option, and to prepare for them. 4. Finally, the book debunks a number of counterproductive myths and misconceptions about martial art, resulting from the misinterpretation of languages, from cross cultural confusion, and from general ignorance. Igensho can be invaluable to any reader because the principles of the art are fundamental, universal, and perennial. |

Martial Arts and Philosophy $21.95 Socrates, an Athenian soldier, was a calmly efficient killing machine. His student Plato was an accomplished and broad-shouldered wrestler. Martial arts and philosophy have always gone hand in hand, as well as fist in throat. Philosophical argument is closely parallel with hand-to-hand combat. And all of today’s Asian martial arts—like Karate, Kung-Fu, Judo, or Aikido—were developed to embody and apply philosophical ideas. The Japanese martial tradition of Budo, for instance, was influenced by the three philosophical traditions of Shinto, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism, and these philosophies are still taught in Japanese martial arts schools all across the world. As Damon Young explains in his chapter, the Japanese martial arts customs of courtesy are derived from Shinto purity, Confucian virtues, and the loving brutality of Zen. In his interview with Bodidharma (included in the book), Graham Priest brings out aspects of Buddhist philosophy behind Shaolin Kung-Fu—how fighting monks are seeking Buddhahood, not brawls. But as Scott Farrell’s chapter reveals, Eastern martial arts have no monopoly on philosophical traditions. Western chivalry is an education in and living revival of Aristotelian ethical theories. The Western martial art of fencing is explored by Nick Michaud, who looks at the morality of selfishness in fencing, and Christopher Lawrence and Jeremy Moss, who try to pin down what makes fencing unique: is it the sword, the techniques, the footwork, the aristocratic aura, or something else?. Jack Fuller argues that his training in Karate was an education in Stoicism. Travis Taylor and Sasha Cooper reveal the utilitarian thinking behind Jigoro Kano’s Judo. Kevin Krein maintains that the martial arts are a reply to the existentialist’s anxiety about the meaninglessness of life. Patricia Peterson examines Karate’s contribution to feminism, and Scott Beattie analyzes the role of space in the martial arts school. Joe Lynch pits the Western ideas of Plato against the Eastern ideas of the Shaolin monks. Bronwyn Finnigan and Koji Tanaka uncover the meaning of human action as it appears in Kendo. Rick Schubert explains the meaning of mastery in the fighting arts. Moving to ethical issues, Tamara Kohn discovers what we owe to others in Aikido. Chris Mortensen questions whether his own Buddhist pacifism is compatible with being a martial artist. In different ways, Gillian Russell and John Haffner and Jason Vogel assess the ways in which martial arts can morally compromise us. How can the sweaty and the brutal be exquisitely beautiful? Judy Saltzman looks into the curious charm of fighting and forms, with help from Friedrich Nietzsche. |

The Last Lama Warrior: The Secret Martial Art of Tibet $18.47 The first book in English to reveal the principles and techniques of the Tibetan martial art of Senguei Ngaro – Written by the last holder of the Senguei Ngaro to receive this teaching from its last surviving master – Reveals the postures, rules, and teachings of this martial art rooted in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition Senguei Ngaro, which means "the lion’s roar," is a traditional martial art that was born in the Kham region of Tibet and was secretly handed down by its lineage of warrior monks from the fifteenth century until 1956, when Chinese soldiers destroyed the monastery and massacred all the monks. The superior of the monastery, Lama Bui, survived and fled to the West where he taught it to Lama Tra, the teacher of the author of this book. Today Yogi Tchouzar Pa is the keeper and guardian of this almost vanished tradition. Senguei Ngaro consists of a series of 86 movements and 10 techniques inspired by animal behavior. It offers both a formidable art of combat and, when combined with its advanced meditation on the ultimate nature of spirituality, a means of spiritual advancement. In The Last Lama Warrior, Yogi Tchouzar Pa provides for the first time in English a fully illustrated and detailed explanation of these postures and their purpose as well as the spiritual principles and traditions on which they are founded. As Yogi Tchouzar Pa explains, "it is only by practicing the physical forms that the depth of the spiritual principles can be understood." |

The Power of Internal Martial Arts and Chi: Combat and Energy Secrets of Ba Gua, Tai Chi and Hsing-I $21.41 Originally published in 1998, this book has become a martial arts classic. It provides detailed descriptions of the three main internal martial arts–tai chi (taiji), hsing-i (xingyi) and ba gua (pakua)–and their sub-styles, as well as how they differ from each other and from such external arts as karate, tae kwon do and judo. Each internal martial art is analyzed in terms of its fighting strategies and applications. This revised edition includes 50 pages of additional material including a new chapter on martial arts and spirituality. This was the first book to provide in-depth information to Westerners about nei gung ("neijiaquan"), the sophisticated Taoist system developed in ancient China for working with chi in the body, mind and spirit. Chi helps build relaxed speed and power without the use of muscular tension or adrenaline surges. This gives many internal martial artists a powerful edge over counterparts trained in external martial arts. The book provides vivid details about Frantzis’ personal training odyssey in the martial arts, including fascinating profiles of such renowned martial artists as Morehei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido; ba gua master Wang Shu Jin, who emanated chi so powerfully that on cold days his students could warm their hands by standing near him; and Liu Hung Chieh, the legendary master of the internal martial arts and Taoist meditation who also had a complete knowledge of traditional Chinese medical theory. The new edition demystifies the technique known as fa jin, the storage and sudden discharge of energy without the use of muscular force, one aspect of which is demonstrated on the front cover. The new edition also adds a lengthy chapter on the spiritual development of a martial artist, and describes how the internal martial arts are linked to Taoist meditation. |

Historical Martial Arts, Including: Hwa Rang Do, Subak, Greek Wrestling, Asian Martial Arts (Origins), History of Martial Arts, Se $15.6 Hephaestus Books represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. To date, this content has been curated from Wikipedia articles and images under Creative Commons licensing, although as Hephaestus Books continues to increase in scope and dimension, more licensed and public domain content is being added. We believe books such as this represent a new and exciting lexicon in the sharing of human knowledge. This particular book is a collaboration focused on Historical martial arts.More info: The early history of martial arts is difficult to reconstruct. Inherent patterns of human aggression which inspire practice of mock combat (in particular wrestling) and optimization of serious close combat as cultural universals are doubtlessly inherited from the pre-human stage, and were made into an "art" from the earliest emergence of that concept. Indeed, many universals of martial art are fixed by the specifics of human physiology and not dependent on a specific tradition or era. |

Kalaripayat: The Martial Arts Tradition of India $16.17 The first book in English on the Indian marital art that was the precursor to the Chinese and Japanese traditions – A rigorous martial arts practice that also promotes harmonious self-development – Provides practices for controlling the circulation of energy and vital forces throughout the body Originating in the southern Indian province of Kerala, kalaripayat is the most ancient of the Eastern martial arts. Yet today it has been practically forgotten. Former CBS war correspondent Patrick Denaud looks at this neglected tradition, whose history spans millennia, from the time it was transmitted by the god Vishnu to the sage Parasurama and his twenty-one disciples, the original Gurukkals, to its present-day practice. More than an art of combat, kalaripayat is a way of life and a spiritual discipline. Its martial techniques are designed to create states propitious for deep meditation. Long the jealously guarded art of the Nair warriors of southern India, kalaripayat was banned by the British East India Company in 1793 and was long believed by outside observers to be extinct. Several Gurukkals continued a clandestine practice and secretly trained the students who would transmit the teachings to today’s keepers of the art, such as Gurukkal Pratap S. Balachandrian. Like other spiritual disciplines, kalaripayat draws from the science of breath. Focused, silent breathing creates highly concentrated trance states and helps control the inner circulation of vital energy. The practitioner learns not only how to be a capable fighter with or without weapons but also an accomplished healer. The emphasis of this practice on circulating energy throughout the body is not only of interest to martial arts practitioners but also to all those interested in the harmonious development of the self. |

Yiquan, Martial Art $47.72 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Yi quan, also known as dacheng quan, is a martial art system which was founded by the Chinese xingyiquan master, Wang Xiangzhai. Having studied xingyiquan with Guo Yunshen in his childhood, Wang Xiangzhai travelled China, meeting and comparing skills with masters of various styles of kung fu. In the mid-1920s, he came to the conclusion that xingyiquan was often taught wrong, with too much emphasis on ‘outer form’, neglecting the essence of true martial power. He worked to return to what he felt was the true essence of the art using a different name, without the ‘xing’ (meaning form), and began teaching and practicing accordingly. |

Masters of Medieval and Renaissance Martial Arts: Rediscovering the Western Combat Heritage $53.99 More than a dozen of the most respected names in medieval and Renaissance scholarship have come together to present a variety of fighting lore from the rich heritage of the European fight masters, circa 1350 to 1675. The list of legendary fighters and instructors contained within these pages reads like a combat honor roll and includes Johannes Liechtenauer, Fiore dei Liberi, Giacomo di Grassi, Henry de Sainct Didier, Joseph Swetnam and Hugues Wittenwiller. Historical documents translated and analyzed include "Das Solothurner Fechtbuch," "Le Jeu de la Hache," and the "Gladiatoria." These contributions from Dr. Sydney Anglo, John Clements, David Lindholm, Brian Hunt, Grzegorz Zabinski, Gene Tausk, Stacy Clifford and other modern scholars bring to life the words and fighting techniques of the masters of long ago. The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe $60.11 Mounted encounters by armored knights locked in desperate hand-to-hand combat, stabbing and wrestling in tavern brawls, deceits and brutalities in street affrays, balletic homicide on the dueling field — these were the martial arts of Renaissance Europe. In this extensively illustrated book Sydney Anglo, a leading historian of the Renaissance and its symbolism, provides the first complete study of the martial arts from the late fifteenth to the late seventeenth century. He explains the significance of martial arts in Renaissance education and everyday life and offers a full account of the social implications of one-to-one combat training. Like the martial arts of Eastern societies, ritualized combat in the West was linked to contemporary social and scientific concerns, Anglo shows. During the Renaissance, physical exercise was regarded as central to the education of knights and gentlemen. Soldiers wielded a variety of weapons on the battlefield, and it was normal for civilians to carry swords and know how to use them. In schools across the continent, professional masters-of-arms taught the skills necessary to survive in a society where violence was endemic and life cheap. Anglo draws on a wealth of evidence — from detailed treatises and sketches by jobbing artists to magnificent images by Durer and Cranach and descriptions of real combat, weapons and armor -to reconstruct and illustrate the arts taught by these ancient masters-at-arms. |
